Biographical information on this gentleman would be very much appreciated. I have just a very little and would like to add to that. Thank you. IP: Logged |

Have you read his brother's will? Sorry -- that would be Madison Conard's will. (John Alexander had 5 brothers.) [This message has been edited by wev (edited 02-17-2009).] IP: Logged |

He appears to have been involved in a number of law-suits involving the actions of his (and his son's) company, the Mississippi Valley Bank of Vicksburg, both before and after its collapse in 1883. IP: Logged |

Early Information on John Alexander Klein can be found in Cutten's Virginia book. He was in Leesburg Virginia from 1833-37. He evidently went south to Vicksburg, Mississippi, in 1836 and opened a shop there, because he advertised in the Vicksburg Register on November 12th 1836. His place of business at that time was one door above the Lottery Exchange, Main Street. He built a large mansion, Cedar Grove, overlooking the Mississippi River. He was listed as a jeweler in the 1850 Census, age 37, in Marshall County. He was in a partnership with S.H. Wilson, from 1842-1849 and advertised in the Tri Weekly Whig in 1849 as Wilson & Klein. Wilson & Klein also had a store in Yazoo City, Mississippi and advertised there in the Yazoo Democrat on October 7, 1846. John A. Klein was also advertising as early as 1854 as Klein & Brother and he and his brother were active in the Episcopal Church in Vicksburg. S.H. Wilson moved to Yazoo City and probably took over the shop there and Klein evidently kept the one in Vicksburg. L.A. Smith was supposed to print an article on Mississippi Silver in "The Magazine Antiques" in 1980 but I do not have that reference available to me at this time. IP: Logged |

Thank you Tad. Some Klein family members were hoping to learn more about their ancestor, so it all helps. IP: Logged |
