Mercury gilding was a very popular method of adding a layer of gold to brass and other materials for many years. This practice has been abandoned by most since it exposure to the mercury and the fumes caused when the metal is burned off is dangerous. It is possible to do this safely with the use of water filtering system to reclaim the mercury and eliminate the escape of the vapors. It is fascinating to read this account and doubly special to have found it in a copy of Payne's book. Fred IP: Logged |
