I find it curious that the woman silversmith is never named. IP: Logged |

Western probably means Chicago, where there were quite a group of women making art jewelry...no pictures and no name. Not the most helpful career boost for this proficient amateur silversmith. The Arts and Crafts movement is so highly touted for its support of women as artisan/craftsmen, but the truth is that even there women had to fight for every gain they made. This sort of newspaper piece just underscores the subtle discrimination they endured. Margret Craver always maintained that she was the first woman silversmith in America, probably because she had never seen another one publicized by name before! IP: Logged |

What does it mean by "she uses crude ore just as it comes from the mine"? Is silver ore useable without processing? IP: Logged |

We know they are writing about Liberty and Co. but how would the reader? Why would they leave this out? Is this done intentionally to keep women in their place or was it just enough so that the women can suggest what she wants for xmass?
