This thread relates to Sign up here - Free PDF copy of the 1910 Black, Starr & Frost publication and Free PDF copy of the 1910 Black, Starr & Frost publication.
----- ------ ------ ------ ------- ------ --------

I have started compiling a list of might be available in PDF for future download by full Silver Salon Members. I am sure as I rummage through things and there will be other materials to add to the list below.

The list below is my first pass –

    What I need is
  1. To hear from everyone .
To determine if there is enough interest?

  2. And then to figure out which publications should be made available first?
Let me know your first, second, etc. choice.

Please know its more than just scanning. It is a lot of work to properly prepare the PDF for downloading. And because of the large file sizes, it is a lot of SSF site overhead/cost.

This first list is in no particular order:

  1. (blakstones's) - a 1920's German Jeweler's Yearbook
    (blakstone may have withdrawn this)
  2. (blakstones's) - Austrian Assay Office Code Chart

Since the first publication in the PDF download project has been completed; the question is whether to do another? And if yes what should it be?

Would be interested in P.

Need a more complete citation for L.

"I" (if MFA 1906, I have it) would be good to make available, but only if the photographic plates can be reproduced clearly.

I know WEV's, June's and my own wish list....

This makes only 8 interested parties.

Even thought there isn't much demonstrated interest, I intend to do one more attempt to get this PDF project going. I am not sure what will be selected.... Right now I need a break from doing the PDF's, so it will be another few weeks.

If anyone one has a PDF ready that they would like to share just let me know.

Sorry for the late reply to this thread but I would be interested in participating. My experience with making pdf files is extremly limited so if there is a tutorial available, I would love to read it. My current way is to make copies (b&w only) of each page and then run them thru a copier that formats them as pdf files. I am also not sure how to post them to the forum like I di with pictures. Most of what I have are 20th Century phamphlets, booklets and catalogues from the major manufacturers (Gorham, Reed & Barton etc.)

As far as what has already been listed I would live to have copies of: O,S,T,AJ.

Robert

Thank you for the offer to help the PDF project and the catalog offer.

There are many different ways to get stuff into the PDF format. There are paid programs, free programs, online services, digital shops (ie. Kinko’s, Stable’s), etc. Depending on what you select as your method to PDF, what you will need to know will vary. Many of the free programs have good tutorials available.

As it regards hosting the PDF for download, if we decide what you have would be a good offering to the SSF membership, then would be glad to host the PDF file.

Thanks for letting us know what from our list is of interest to you. Would you do a list of what you have available for members to consider?

I'm happy with everyone else's choices.

I hope this project is continued.

I have a mid 20's Lunt Chateau Thierry catalog/brochure to offer, but I fear it would only be of interest to collectors of that pattern. It is my oldest piece of ephemera.

We have our next PDF offering available:

What I am curious about is why so few members have signed up? Is it because the catalogs offered are not that interesting or is it something else?

A better understanding of this will help us to decide whether to continue or not.

Scott, I do think you have some merit in the fact that not all of the items are going to interest everyone but I was wondering: is it possible to determine what have been the "hot topics" of the past 1-2 years (based on either responses or page hits)? If so, then maybe someone out there might have items relating to those topicss that would interest more people.

My 2-cents worth

Some web sites do that kind of tracking (spying) on their members/visitors. We don’t. We do keep some security info and only use it when there is a problem.

What I am curious about is why so few members have signed up? Is it because the catalogs offered are not that interesting or is it something else?

A better understanding of this will help us to decide whether to continue or not.

It is very clear that the few who signed up to get the PDFs are very appreciative of the documents.

At the Silver Salon Forums, everyday there are many page hits, so we had expected/hoped many more users/lurkers to sign up. An example of the number of page hits in a week:

    9/29/2010 to 10/5/2010
  • Total Hits = 93,180
  • Average Hits Per Day = 15,530

Clearly our hopes for this project fell short. So for now we are going to take a break.

When time permits, we will eventually prepare and offer another PDF. So please be sure to suggest what you would like to see as the next PDF.

If you have a hard to find good quality scan that you want to share please let us all know. If there is interest then we can take steps to host and to make it available.
