Has anybody purchased or had a chance to look through the new 5th edition of Rainwater's Encyclopedia of American Silver Marks? I just saw it tonight for the first time. I noticed Rainwater said in the introduction that there was new information, and that some old information was removed. Any opinions of the latest edition? IP: Logged |

We just purchased a copy. We haven't had the time to inspect it throughly. Given what we heard, we are reasonably certain that we may never really rely on it. It might be useful to explain where the misinformation is originating. The first thing we noticed was that it has gone from $19.95 to $29.95. And for more money it seems skinnier (320 pages instead of 418 pages in the 4th edition). The next telltale is that even though it is 2003 the copyright is 2004. We also noticed that some smiths known to have worked in Massachusetts remain in the same city but the city has moved to Maine. There are some new marks listed in the book which is great, but given the other known inaccuracies, we wonder if we can depend on the information on the new marks.

The price hike is the main reason I didn't pick it up, but I also noticed the smaller size. IP: Logged |
