The main reference I have used for the last 30+ years is Turner. I imagine most of you are familiar with it. What I wonder is why has this not been reissued since the late 70's?

I started out collecting silver in the mid 1970's in Chicago. And rapidly got and devoured a copy of Turner. Looking back what strikes me as strange is that I never met Turner. I did know a few older dealers who referred to him as a 'nut' or 'pain'. Beyond that, nothing. There were never charming, or grotesque, anecdotes about him. Just a dismissal of Turner as a person with a recomendation to read his book.

Now what strikes me as truly strange is that Turner claimed to have done his research at the Chicago Art Institute. I dated someone who worked there in the early 70's. The Art Institue is not a research institution. It is a teaching and exhibiting institution. At that time, the 'archives' of the AI were stored haphazardly in paper bags. How could anyone have dug throught them and put together a book.

This has always mystified me. Turner claimed sources, that I have been told, no one else has ever found. He points to them in the AI archives. Which really did not exist in a searchable form at that time, as far as I can tell.

Anyway, this is something that has bothered me for a long time.

Can anyone spread any light on the situation?

American Silver Flatware: 1837-1910
by Turner, Noel
I am not sure if this is the one you are referring to, but this one was repinted in 1997. I do not know the quality of the reprint.
