Hi all I am thinking about buying Culme's The Directory of Gold & Silversmiths, Jewellers and allied Traders 1838-1914, but most sellers seem to be selling "Volume 1" only. Is there actually a Volume 2? Is it important to get it? Or will Volume 1 suffice? Thanks Waylander IP: Logged |

There certainly is a volume 2. That contains about 15,000 marks photos, remembering that some makers had multiple marks over a period of years. Volume 1 covers the biographical entries, about 4,000 of them. To me, they should be indivisible, but maybe some vendors hang onto the mark illustrations and don't care much for the biographical stuff, and so try to cash it in. IP: Logged |

I, too, have looked in vain for a complete set. Not having seen the books in person, I was not aware of what was contained in Volume I vs. Volume II, and I have given thought to only purchasing Volume I. This posting may well have prevented me from making a signficant mistake! IP: Logged |

Volume 1 has some brilliant information, and for anyone seriously interested in English silver of that period it is certainly recommended. Although centred on London, many makers from outside that city registered their marks at the London Assay Office. The biographies not only give detailed information about the makers and companies, but also map out the retailing networks. These two volumes are certainly the equivalent in their period to Grimwade for his. IP: Logged |

I purchased these books about four years ago. They are brilliant and quite comprehensive for the time period they cover. The illustrations are all photographic, so there is no doubt regarding identification of manufacturer's marks. Since it has been a while and many books ago, I can't remember for sure where I purchased them, but I believe it was The Antique Collectors Club. I have checked their website and no longer see them available. After Googling for the set, I went into shock seeing the current prices being asked. It seems there are several sets available on the secondary market. I would not recommend ordering them from a UK dealer, if you are located in the US, and vice versa, as the set weighs nine pounds, so postage would be prohibitve. While in retrospect, they certainly were a good investment as they have in many cases doubled in price. The sad part is that I rarely use them since I don't buy much English silver anymore and can't remember IP: Logged |
