I ran across this lovely receipt for silver order of Mr. Boardman by Cornelia Hawes Pond on 20 September 1837
1 Butter knife 15/- 2.50 Making 2 setts of swedg'd Teas 6/ea 2.00 " 2 ———— " Table 4/6 ea 1.50 " 1 pr of Tongs with claws 1.25 " 1 " " swedg'd salt .33 " " ———— Mustard .17 Cash p'd for Marking 6/- 1.00 [total] $ 23.31 Miss Pond was of Bangor ME; she married Dr. Charles Proctor the next year and died in 1849. Mr. Boardman has long been a thorn in my researches. I am pretty sure he is the watchmaker and jeweler "of Maine" who was established in Honolulu HI by 1841. There is an Edward H. Boardman in the 1840 census for Penobscot County, but past that I have found nothing. Very irritating. IP: Logged |

E H Boardman has stated the location Orono in the receipt. Edward H Boardman is listed in the 1840 U S Federal Census for Orono, Penobscot, Maine aged between twenty and thirty years and employed in manufacturing and (or) trade. IP: Logged |

I think bascall is on to something, since the invoice references Orono, which is in Central Maine. Having grown up in Orono, I would be happy to connect you with members of the Historical Society there. The Boardman name is well known in Orono; the University of Maine is located there one of the past presidents was Harold Sherburne Boardman, born in 1874. There's even a Boardman Hall on campus, where I had a number of classes. But I think I digress, based on the dates! IP: Logged |

Yes, that is the same census listing that I saw -- I just need to proofread better before I post. I would very much like to add Boardman to my project and would appreciate any help in doing so. There are already quite a few pewtersmith Boardman's included, but I have not worked out Edward's connection (if there is one) to any of the family lines. IP: Logged |

I have reached out to someone on the Orono Historical Society so will let you know if I learn anything. IP: Logged |

Unfortunately, no further elucidation on Mr. EH Boardman. I was able to correspond with a member of the Orono Historical Society, who was generous enough to go through several sources but to no avail. IP: Logged |

This may not be enough to really turn a corner on this investigation either, but I can add that Edward H Boardman age 53 and a native of New Hampshire died on 25 March 1867 in San Francisco, California. From all that I have seen about this gentleman, I am fairly certain that this is the correct party. From the March 26, 1867 edition of the San Francisco Daily Morning Call: IP: Logged |
