I got an interesting letter a few days ago from the country merchant/pewtersmith Willard Clark to Samuel Yale. While it pertains to pewter, rather than silver, the quantities involved are impressive enough to post here. Duxbury March 13 1844 Mr Yale Dear Sir I shall want 6 gross of tea spoons & 2 gross of Buft tabel [sic] spoons the same as I bout [sic] of you in 1841 if you can sell the tea spoons at 2/50 per gross & tabels at 6/ per gross & 6 doz Hous [sic] Lanterns at 1/25 per doz Cash on delivery in Boston the tabel spoons as N1 Buft & the tea spoons N1 Burnished & 35 D of Large Pewter Porringers at 20 cents & if you can afford to sell this lot at these prices please send them along as soon as you can to Boston & Direct them to Mr Josiah Clark No 24 Long Wharfe Boston & I will pay for them as soon as I receive them Your oblig Ser As an aside, apropos of the current forum discussions, I asked a pewter collector/scholar if it would he would like to post it on to others. He replied that he doubted anyone really cared anymore; we aren't so all alone these days. IP: Logged |

Thanks for sharing this. I find it interesting. Also if your pewter collector/scholar friend would like to join here, I'm sure, like your post, we will find it interesting. IP: Logged |

I suspect the interest in reference books would be an indication of how well silver, pewter or many other antiques are selling. Collectors like reference books and if the sales go down that would be a good indication of lack of new collectors. Or old collectors buying new books.
