If anyone has made a book scanner, I might be interested in renting/borrowing it.

ahwt, google's scanning tech is fascinating. i always wondered how they did that.

it would be wonderful if that service could be provided to (paying) customers who wanted to scan their libraries. imagine having your entire reference collection stored in a searchable format on your computer or e-reader. or on your phone for research on the go. and no more wear and tear to the books themselves. i'm practically salivating.

i suppose that could create copyright issues, unless they watermarked each page or used some kind of proprietary format that couldn't be printed or redistributed.

i have often thought of scanning some of my more oft-used references but the prospect is daunting.

The June 2022 issue of Smithsonian has a short article on the Library of Congress and notes that this collection now includes more than 25 million books. The Library started digitizing their collection in 1990. They have continued to scan books manually and once scanned can digitize 600 books in 30 minutes.
This article does not disclose that methods they use, although they do get some of the labor involved by “crowdsourcing” projects with volunteers.
