I am in need of help most urgently. I am purchasing a Gorham rose bowl that is done in a great repousse style. It is huge. It has the Gorham hallmarks, lion, anchor, gotic "G". It also has a very tiny crescent moon shape on the underside of the base. My guess is that this is a date mark. I can find no info. anywhere. The dealer insists this mark means 1830. I am skeptical. Any help would be a huge gift from the silver gods. Kenmon@proxyma.net Thanks,Ken IP: Logged |

You are right to be skeptical. Gorham didn't even introduce their Lion Anchor G trademark until 1848 at the earliest. The dealer is dead wrong, and obviously knows little or nothing about Gorham. Gorham did use tiny stamps on holloware as date marks, beginning with a series of letters in 1868. The crescent moon mark denotes 1895, which fits in well with your description. The 1890's were about the peak of ornateness in American silver. Hope this helps! To help stay clear of dealer misinformation, get yourself a copy of Dorothy Rainwater's "Encyclopedia of American Silver Manufacturers". The fourth edition just came out last year, and at about $16.00 it is the greatest bargain in silver references. All of the information I just provided can be found this book. IP: Logged |
