What is wrong with people? Where does the seller get the idea that this is Martele? Am I wrong? See auction: [(538571971) - Gone from internet] IP: Logged |

We have seen many listings on ebay that have been very inaccurate, this being just one more. When we first started noticing the errors, we would contact the seller and explain the mistake. Sometimes the seller would be grateful. Sometimes the seller would tell us in not so many words to kiss off. Ebay is like any other marketplace - buyer beware. There are knowledgeable and honest sellers out there and there are those that will say anything to make the sale. I don't know whether this particular seller just thought adding the "Martele" tag would create interest or whether they genuinely got some bad advice from someone else. At any rate, someone liked the piece enought to bid. Hope they don't really think it is Martele. IP: Logged |

It is a nice piece, but definitely not Martele. Note how they put it in quotes. Perhaps they are just using some false advertising to attract people who might bid on it anyway. I would hate to think that there are people out there thinking that everything Gorham Art Nouveau is Martele. If it doesn't say Martele, or 950/1000, then it isn't. I guess look on the bright side. If dealers actually did know everything, there wouldn't be any bargains to discover. IP: Logged |

eBayer--you asked "Where does the seller get the idea that this is Martele?" Unfortunately, there seems to be a myth that is partially perpetuated by certain reference books which say just that--Gorham called its Art Nouveau wares Martelé. It's disappointing to see misinformation propagated by reference books. So probably that seller thinks if it's Gorham and Art Nouveau, it's Martelé; they don't know that the term refers to a specific line. I presume the piece in question is Art Nouveau--the pics are no longer available to view. I used to email sellers to inform them of their errors--most didn't even acknowledge it, some thanked me, and only one or two updated their descriptions. Only if something is particularly galling do I email the seller. I saw somebody describe an Gorham hammered copper vase with applied silver, an Aesthetic Movement piece from 1883, as Martelé. That time I sent a lenghty email explaining the differences in style, manner of production, time period, etc. And I do agree with Brent...I'm guilty of more than once holding my tongue about a piece's true identity in order to score a bargain.
