I picked up a neat Gorham souvenir trowel at the Piers yesterday. It is from the 1914 cornerstone laying of the Equitable Building in NYC. Its markings are Gorham's tripartite mark, "STERLING," and below that, "C D J". Can anybody tell me what CDJ means? Could it be a special order marking? I expect this souvenir was not made in great numbers.

On the Silver Salon Forums we have seen two other posts commenting about the 3 letter code on Gorham silver.

In Gorham "Robber Baron" cigar ashtray

The IDV means a special or custom order (not necessarily one of a kind)--you can use that to figure out the date, I would imagine.

And in Initials???

The three letter codes are associated with special order pieces. I have seen a variety of holloware with the three letter code. A few large tea sets, a neat letter opener and of course, Martele silver with these codes. Some of the silver was rather mundane looking (not the Martele!). If the "A" is higher than the other two letters and sort of still in the middle position, I think that it dates the order to the year 1901. ....

Are there other examples? Maybe if we put together enough examples we can figure out the code?
