Does anybody have a phone # or email address or know a person that I can call to get information on a certain Gorham Tray that I own that has the Gorham Hallmark, Sterling and then the initials (Q A R) under the Gorham Mark? I would like to know what the initials stand for! IP: Logged |

Why don't you post a photo of your piece with the marks in this forum? There are many knowledgable people that participate and we would all like to share in the road of discovery. [This message has been edited by June Martin (edited 06-11-2001).] IP: Logged |

Without being able to see the marks, it sounds like date code letters for a 20th century special order piece. IP: Logged |

The three letter codes are associated with special order pieces. I have seen a variety of holloware with the three letter code. A few large teasets, a neat letter opener and of course, Martele silver with these codes. Some of the silver was rather mundane looking (not the Martele!). If the "A" is higher than the other two letters and sort of still in the middle position, I think that it dates the order to the year 1901. Gorham historian, Samuel Hough can look up your piece in the factory archives for a fee, if you feel your cake plate is special. IP: Logged |

Do you know how much the fee would be? Also, how do I get in touch with Mr. Hough? IP: Logged |

I believe his rate is $50-55 an hour with a one hour minimum. You will receive a typed report on his stationary and photocopies (if available) of any details (the costing sheet, working drawings and photos from the Gorham factory) of your piece. Most of his research projects fit within a one hour time frame. IP: Logged |
