I believe that this is the Louis XVI pattern? Has a "copyright 1896" on the back in addition to usual Gorham marks. Given as a Christmas present in 1898, nice weight.

p.s. I assume that the enameling had to be done by hand? This would certainly make producing a whole set of these quite labor intensive. IP: Logged |

Very nice. It does look like the Louis XVI pattern. I have always assume that this type of enameling was done by hand. I am not aware of any mechanized process in use for enameling in the 1890's. Does anyone know? I have seen enameling quality and technic that varies widely. Because of this, I have had to wondered whether the enameling was done by others in an attempt to create something different? IP: Logged |

The Gorham enameled flatware is, in my own mind, a unique phenomenon in American silver...did any other American firm get so into the enameling of its flatware? Now, Newark owns the mother of all Gorham enamel...dated 1877, and apparently unique. This is a year BEFORE Tiffany unveils the Mackay enameled silver pieces. I bought this for the museum back in 1984 (when I was 29!).
While a more recent gift is an enameled version of Gorham's "Scandinavian" pattern, which is clearly meant to compete with Russian objects coming in through high-end retailers (like Tiffany).

Thank you so much, Mr Dietz, for posting the picture of that Gorham Scandinavian spoon. I have the same one, although the enameling on mine is much the worse for wear. I've never known the pattern name, so thanks for that - but mostly I appreciate seeing a complete example of the piece in all it's over-the-top glory! ______________ Lisa IP: Logged |
