Hi there all, I have just purchased one of the strangest pieces of Gorham sterling silver I have ever seen in my 22 years in the business. I am kind of like Scott in that I never met a piece of silver I did not like, but this is a puzzle. This is a heavy stamped cigar ashtray 6 1/2" in diameter with a "masked man" pointing a gun at you, in the center. Beneath him is the phrase "HANDS UP". Around the rim are a blimp/zeppelin, a train, and a submarine. There is a "JLF" monogram in one of the cigar rests. The stamped marks on the back are "Gorham", the Gorham "Lion, Anchor G", "sterling", and the initials "IDV". No year mark is present. Can anyone tell me anything about it? Marc Cutcher IP: Logged |

Marc, I have seen a few pieces with the same decoration--I think a cigar box and one or two ashtrays on eBay. My guess is they were made for some sort of club or convention. The IDV means a special or custom order (not necessarily one of a kind)--you can use that to figure out the date, I would imagine. I have a Gorham ashtray and pipe from the NYC Sheriff's Panel Jury (or something like that), which were also special/custom orders. Your piece reminded me of those (special order, same form, etc.), so that's why I guessed club or convention. But I have no idea which one; the train, blimp, and ship are suggestive though. The bandit must have significance to the organization too. I can't be of more help though. [This message has been edited by Paul Lemieux (edited 09-13-2002).] IP: Logged |
