Hello: We are trying to determine the age of our Gorham Silver Basket. It was sold by Bailey Banks and Biddle and bears its stamp.
The number 4965 is stamped below 3 emblems and the word Sterling. Left Emblem is a Lion, Middle Emblem is an Anchor, and Right Emblem appears to be an ornate G (for Gorham I suppose) & it is 925/1000 purity. Any response or help would be greatly appreciated as we are novices. Many, many thanks in advance.

Welcome to the Forums!

Well, you are on the right track; you know it is Gorham! Bailey, Banks and Biddle organized under that name in 1878 and are still in business, so we know it was made sometime after 1878, which doesn't help much. The number is simply a pattern or shape number, which also is of limited use unless we have the company records or a wholesale catalog handy.

Fortunately, Gorham used date marks on their holloware, so we may be in business. If the marks are on the bottom, look around the edge opposite the other marks for a little stamp. It may be a letter, or some other kind of character like a bell, a chicken or an airplane. If you can find the date mark and describe it carefully, or send a picture of it, we might be able to date the piece for you. Good luck!

Thank you Brent for your help. We seem to have located a mark near the edge on the bottom of the piece. This mark resembles a flower stem with 3 arrows pointing up, or perhaps they are flowers. Does this help in dating the item. We couldn't quite tell even with a jeweler's loop. Thanks again for your help Brent, it is greatly appreciated. Barb and Claus

The Gorham mark for 1897 was like a trident pointing up and with a very short handle.

I agree, it sounds like the trident mark for 1897. That would be the date the piece was made, but not necessarily when it was sold. Pieces of holloware, particularly large and expensive pieces, sometimes would go unsold for a few years. For example, you may find an 1897 date letter on a piece that was given as a wedding gift in 1902. Just something to keep in mind.

Glad we could help you out.
