I have 5 of these 5" forks and 8 of these 4-1/2" "knives" which I'm tempted to refer to as crab forks and caviar knives. Would that be correct? I also have 12 of these 7" forks, which don't look like the fish forks in Brent's "place setting" -- are they perhaps salad forks? I want to be sure I properly identify them! IP: Logged |

Hi Jan, The small fork is a usually called a seafood or cocktail fork, the larger fork is usually called a pie fork. The small bladed item is unusual, I've seen similar pieces meant for lifting pancakes, but they're usually a bit larger. Doubt that it's for caviar, shape and size doesn't seem right, and caviar can be fouled by a metal server, so the bowls are usually MOP or another non-metallic material. Perhaps they are meant for pate? Cheryl IP: Logged |

We collect Old Medici. We call the knife a pate knife. The shape appears in other Heller patterns. Our cocktail forks measure 5 3/4". We have not seen your shorter fork. IP: Logged |

Thanks, Bob and Carol (and Ted and Alice!) I appreciate your info. I think I'm going to post a new topic asking for a recommendation on a book detailing old-medici pieces because with all the sources I'm checking, I can't seem to get a definitive conclusion on many of my pieces and I don't want to misrepresent them. Do you have any recommendations? Thanks, Jan IP: Logged |
