This is a Gorham item I picked up a flea market. The piece is beautifully decorated with an Art Nouveau iris motif. It measures 4 1/2" by 1 3/8". It looks like it was meant to slide over something; there is a 1/8" space between the front of the piece and the back. I couldn't find this item in the Gorham catalog CD-ROMs.

My guess is your piece is one half of the part that opens of a smallish evening-wear handbag. The other half would have had some form of clip to close them together. The bag itself would have been leather or a meterial such as velvet. IP: Logged |

The handbag top was my initial impression, too - but wouldn't it have been hinged to the other side? Still looks like a mystery to me. Could it possibly be a decoration for the cover of a small bound journal or bible? Cheryl ;o) IP: Logged |

How about it being a mount off some piece of a dressing table set, eg. a brush? IP: Logged |

My first thought was also a handbag top, but there are no hinges or signs of them, and no place where a clasp would have been or any area where a clip could have fit. I'm more inclined to think it was a mount for something. IP: Logged |

Looks like a wallet or billfold mount. IP: Logged |

Without hinges for a purse, Richard Kurtzman's billfold suggestion seems to be correct. IP: Logged |

Richard is right--billfold mount.

Since this is an art nouveau design and has hand work on it, would it be conisidered Martele? IP: Logged |

Neither of these billfolds is Martele. I don't think either has hand decoration either, other than hand-finishing perhaps. They seem to be stamped, with textures employed to give the look of handwork. They are a little better made and heavier than a lot of stamped Nouveau silver, however. The designs are similar in feel to the Gorham H-series flatware that mimics the Martele line. IP: Logged |
