While watching the latest broadcast of Aniques Road Show I noticed the pronunciation of the Gorham line of hammered silver maked Martelle. For all the years I can remember I have pronounce it as Martel with the accent on the e. I noticed that the word Martelle has an accent on the second e. The word martelle is french qui? Whith hammer as it's derivation. Martillo in spanish. Perhaps some of the French speaking patrons here can educate me. Fred IP: Logged |

It is "Martelé", meaning "hammered" in French (from "marteler"--"to hammer"). The "é" is pronounced "ay". IP: Logged |

Paul, Many thanks. It is amazing how one can live in ignorance of such things for so many years..... Fred IP: Logged |
