Here is a fascinating bit of old Gorham silverplate. It is a toothpick (probably)in the form of a rock with a bedouin leaning against it with a tree on the other side. It is marked Gorham & Co, and number 012. According to Carpenter, the company switched from Gorham & Co. to Gorham Manufacturing Co. in 1865, the same year they started silverplate production in earnest. That, plus the low serial number, makes me think it might be one of their first designs in silverplate. The piece is cast, and judging from the wear-through at one edge and the extreme heft of the piece, the base metal appears to be bronze, rather than copper or nickel silver. The mold appears to have been based on a carving, probably in wood. It looks like the sides were carved in two pieces and joined together to make the mold for casting. Anyway, a great bit of Gorham!
