Hi, I have another question on something that could be Gorham. Its an enamel darning egg, with silver handle. On the handle, on one side, G M Co Sterling and some initials which look like a fancy S H. On the other side its marked Chicago. I cant get a good enough picture of the marks but this is the egg.
I was just after a rough date for the piece and some more info. Thanks very much I'm still learning about Gorham so the help is really appreciated.
I've got a pic of the mark, there are no hallmarks on this egg like the anchor or lion. IP: Logged |

I'm pretty sure this is not Gorham. Could the "G" in "G M Co" be something else? IP: Logged |

How much do you want to know about Gorham? You can start by looking at
quote: contains a tiny bit of information, plus illustrated marks. Depending on your level of interest, you might also want to pick up Dorothy Rainwater's Encyclopedia of American Silver Manufacturers. Provides info on hundreds of American silver companies, including a basic overview of Gorham plus all of their date marks. This really is an essential volume for anybody buying silver. Charles Carpenter's Gorham Silver is currently the only Gorham monograph. It can run $75+ depending on where you find it. It is a pretty standard reference. Sam Hough, curator of the Gorham archives, just released an 8-CD set containing scans of numerous Gorham catalogs from 1880-1909. There are literally thousands of images of Gorham products. The price is 350.00. I have found it to be a wonderful resource, but what you need depends again on your level of interest in Gorham. IP: Logged |

Hi again, I've had no luck finding out where this might be from or a date. I'm guessing its from America because of the Chicago engraved. if its not Gorham can someone suggest where I could get this re-posted. Thank you. IP: Logged |

Definitely American, ca 1895-1905. Handle style is typical of many sterling-handled implements produced during this time. IP: Logged |

Hi, I've cleaned it up a bit and it looks more like MM Co, still not sure about the first letter though, it could just be a scratch. But I've looked up some makers in America, sorry I'm British and can only get hold of limited sources in the local library, but I found two makers using them letters. Marcus Merriman and Myers Myers, would it be one of those, or some one else. IP: Logged |

Without knowing that first letter, it will be hard to track down the maker. I'm sure it means --- Manufacturing Company. It looks like there is a letter there, and not just a scratch. Merriman and Myers are too early for this piece. IP: Logged |

Here is s a pic of the handle if its any better than the last one. iv spoken to few people today, and most think the letter I cant make out would be either a M or V. I haven't been able to find anything for these letters, but hopefully you guys might know something. Thanks again for the help. IP: Logged |
