[13-0124] Hi, I wonder if any one out there can help shed some light on this strange spoon which I recently purchased in an auction in the UK. It has a Gorham hallmark i.e Lion - Anchor - and Gothic style "G". followed by Sterling. The retailers were John Stevenson's Sons & Co. Pittsburgh PA. which is stamped on the shank and on the box. It is 9 1/2 inch long and the bowl is 2 1/2inch wide. There is a the name Sallie inscribed on the end of the handle and the bowl is silver gilt. There is no date letter but I think it date from the late 19th c.??? I would also like to know what the significance of the winged serpent is??? Thanks in advance.

Hello, You have a rare and highly desirable piece of American sterling flatware. The pattern is ISIS, introduced by Gorham in 1870. It is actually one of a number of patterns with Egyptian motifs that were popular in the US in that late 1800s. An article on ISIS was published in the September/October 2003 issue of Silver Magazine. Your piece is identified as an ice spoon, for serving cracked ice in the days before refrigeration. You have a real treasure there, especially in its original box. Take good care of it! Brent IP: Logged |

Hi Brent, Thank you very much for the information on the Gorham Isis spoon. Very interesting. Now you have mentioned Egyptian, the winged serpent becomes obvious - I was thinking along the lines that it had something to do with American Indians. Has the Silver Magazine you mentioned got a web site. I'd love to know more about the design and the spoon. I bought it at an auction where it was just labeled as American silver. I'm afraid American silver is very under rated in the UK and all dealer are interested in is British hallmarked silver. Even very good and interesting continental silver is thought of as inferior. Kind regards John Mac Nottingham UK IP: Logged |

You are very welcome. Silver magazine is on the web at www.silvermag.com. You should be able to purchase a copy of the issue in question, if you so desire. I think I ought to make a trip to England sometime to hunt for American silver. I have heard of important American colonial pieces turning up there for low prices. It seems that great Victorian pieces do as well! Take care, Brent IP: Logged |
