I am hoping that someone may shed some light on the subject of the Gorham Scroll versions of Chantilly, Strasbourg, and Buttercup patterns that were produced on a limited basis sometime between 1895-1903. These 'scroll' versions were more elaborate due to the added decorations on the edges of specific piece types (mostly serving pieces)with the design continiuing atleast halfway up the edge of the bowls.
How much more collectible are these pieces and is there a clear defined way to define them from the regularly produced patterns? Do they demand a higher market value? I realize that prices cannot be mentioned but are there indeed collectors out there demanding these 'rarer' pieces and if so, is it the limited production that has influenced this demand?

Hello,

As I understand it, the "decorated edge" serving pieces were simply the earliest ones produced. I will try to confirm this. I believe the decoration was dropped on later pieces, probably as a cost savings from a manufacturing standpoint. The decorated edge pieces do command a premium from serious collectors, but not so much for people who just have the pattern. All three patterns are still in production, and the average buyer seems to happiest with pieces from the mid 20th C, after the "antique" period but before the decline in quality of the late 20th C. Many buyers think that the gold wash on old serving pieces is a bad thing, and may be put off by the monograms that are the norm on old pieces, and the higher prices that the old pieces command.

I hope this helps a bit!
