I recently aquired a buckle that is very art nouveau in feel - lots of foliar/floral curving type design. It is stamped "Sterling" and bears the Gorham lion passant, anchor and gothic "G." It is also marked "193." But I can't identify the year mark in either my Encyclopedia of Silver Manufacturers or my Company Year Marks sheet. It is a raised oval within a stamped oval. On the raised oval is what appears to be an upside down "C." Did Gorham have different marks for items of this type? What year was this piece made? IP: Logged |

This sounds like the 1889 date mark. The design of this date mark is actually a woman's head within an oval frame, but it's hard to recognize sometimes. Gorham produced several similarly styled buckles in the late 1880s--all with Rococo type scrolls. I will post a picture of one that I have when I get a chance. IP: Logged |

Thanks, Paul - I appreciate it. I actually have two of these buckles . . . the year marks are both difficult to make out. I too, have come to the conclusion that it is the 1899 mark . . . the style of the buckle fits for this time period. Again, thank you! IP: Logged |
