This is an item I was surprised to find signed "The Gorham Co." It came in a bag of about 50 other unused turn-of-the-century engraved book name plates, each of a different design. I assume the signature means Gorham produced the original copper engraving from which the plate was made. It is also marked with a conjoined "HHD" (the original engraver, probably) and "08," the date I believe. I was not aware that Gorham produced such items. Has anybody else seen engravings signed by Gorham?

Gorham was such a large and prolific company that I am sure we will continue to stumble upon more unexpected Gorham items in the future, such as the book plate above and swarter's Gorham microscope!. If anybody else has any unexpectedly Gorham items, please post them! IP: Logged |

I have no pictures to share, but I did once handle and consider buying a Gorham silver wristwatch. It was of the very early style with the hinged cover on the back, a carryover from pocket watches. However, the whole piece was a Swiss production. The movement was by Gallet, a well known producer of movements for more prestigious names, and the case was Swiss 800 silver. We often forget that the Gorham stores were major retail outlets, and didn't just sell their own products. Still, it would have been nice to see a Gorham silver watch case! It reminds me of a piece I posted a a few years back, an sterling International Silver Co. employee service pin made by some other company. Brent IP: Logged |
