I have a couple of questions about hallmarks on a sterling goblet. It has the Birmingham stamp and lion passant, but the lion is facing to the right, not the left. All of my reference books show the lion facing left. Secondly, The capital G in Old English style would indicate that the hallmarking date was 1830, but the cartouche shown for that date is shield shaped, and the cartouche on the goblet is an octagon. The duty stamp is of a woman's head facing to the right, with a five pointed star over her head inside the surrounding oval. This goblet has no maker's mark, and is stamped with the word sterling just below the hallmarks. If any one has any thoughts on this I would appreciate it.

These are the trademarks of the Gorham Company. They are not Birmaingam Hallmarks. IP: Logged |
