This was found in a 1900 Gorham catalog. I can’t fathom why Gorham would include this guy in their catalog unless he was well known. Any ideas as to who he is or why they would include such a scarey looking guy? Maybe Grandfathers looked much different in those days.

Is it Jabez Gorham? Or his father? IP: Logged |

If they were selling a silver decorated frame, maybe it was just a humorous filler for the frame? IP: Logged |

The more I look at him the more I think he must be a famous actor in character. IP: Logged |

I agree that it's probably an actor in character. (Surely it isn't Santa caught off-guard?) [This message has been edited by Paul Lemieux (edited 10-19-2004).] IP: Logged |

An allusion to Father Time, in keeping with the oak leaf and acorn theme? My feeling is that the image is meant to indicate to customers the sort of photograph that would be appropriate--an aged or venerable relative--to a frame with this iconography. Oak: wisdom, strength, longevity, etc. [This message has been edited by heatherjanemcc (edited 10-29-2004).] [This message has been edited by heatherjanemcc (edited 10-30-2004).] IP: Logged |

Could this be a poet? Like, the one who wrote a lot of Quaker literature? Seems to me that he might be someone known to Victorian audiences. IP: Logged |

A very elderly Walt Whitman perhaps? IP: Logged |

Scott, what does the caption say? Are other frames illustrated with other folks' images in the same catalogue? IP: Logged |

Well I don't know about the Who, but Why? Might be humor... might also be to make the shopper think "Gee, Uncle George (or Mom or Me or whoever) would look soooo much better in that frame!" and it might also be that his expression of surprise (horror?) draws one's attention. It got yours, didn't it? IP: Logged |
