I have just aquired some old food covers from an old hospital. They have the gorham name with anchor below, and the letters "E P" under that and slill further down the words "silver soldered" and next down the numbers 03963. Beside the anchor is an elephant stamp. If this is plate, what did they use as a base metal, it is soft, non-ferrous, and the same color as the silver? any help appretiated. IP: Logged |

I believe you have plated ware. EP is code for electroplate. Silver soldered is also found often on silver plated ware. Gorham numbering for silver plated ware has a zero prefix. And I believe the base metal is either nickel silver or britania metal. Both are white relatively soft metals. IP: Logged |
