I have a set of forks which are Gorham Sterling. They are somewhat similar to the Fontainebleau patter except it is of a woman. She is wearing a dress and appears to be using a large upright butterchurn. It may also be some type of grape smasher because there also appears to be a wine theme (bottles on back of fork). I have not been able to identify the pattern. It is engraves with my great-great-grandmother's initials which would put it sometime in the late 1800s. I would post pictures, however I am having difficulty getting the Internet posting thing to work. Thanks. IP: Logged |

Gorham produced three very similar patterns; Fontainebleau, Gilpen and The Piper. Gilpen and The Piper depict children, while Fontainebleau is all adults. Each of the patterns is also multi-motif, which means that each different type of piece will have a different character on the handle (though there will be some repetition). The woman churning butter is one of the Fontainebleau motifs, so your forks are Fontainebleau. Hope this helps! Brent IP: Logged |

Thank you so much. Does anyone happen to know the years which the Fontainebleau pattern was made? IP: Logged |

Fontainebleau was introduced in 1882. I am not certain as to the period of time it was actively being produced. However, I recently acquired a Made To Order brochure for Gorham which shows Fontainebleau as one of the patterns available through the program. The brochure is dated October 1963.
