I have seen (more than once) the figure in the Shiebler "Sunny South" pattern (SIN# S0211) referred to as "Johnnie Griffin". This characterization is also found in other non Shiebler products.

I know that there was/is a jazz musician Johnny Griffin but he was born about the time Shiebler went out of business.

I would like to know who was "Johnnie Griffin"??

From an old auction listing of a Shiebler "Sunny South" spoon:
quote:
"....For the uninitiated the young negro lad Johnnie Griffin was a real person who hawked newspapers on the streets of Philadelphia during the late 1890's. ....."

Greenleaf & Crosby sold a number of items with the Johnny/Johnnie Griffin likeness in addition to the Sunny South spoon, they were extremely popular for many years; supposedly the image represented the Jacksonville Evening Telegram newsboy who worked outside their store in the early 1890s. Believe a number of items with his face were made by several manufacturers well into the 20th century.
