![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I just realized that I have been thinking of the pronunciation of this name as "shybler" rather than "sheebler" which is suggested by the spelling. What is the accepted pronunciation? If it is to be pronounced "shybler", was the family name ever "Sheibler"? ------------------ IP: Logged |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I have always pronounced the name as 'SHE-blur'. I have married into a German family and our name starts out as Wieb... it is supposed to be said as Weeb...(And the German way would actually be 'Veeb...!)mostly telephone solicitators get it wrong so we know right away! I am curious to know what others think...we can of course add the correct saying of Stieff...is it 'Steef' or is it 'Styff'? IP: Logged |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() In most "ei" or "ie" names, I pronounce the second letter. So Shiebler is "shee' -blur" and Stieff is "steef". IP: Logged |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() In German, and thus with any German name or word, ei is always pronounced "eye" and ie is pronounced "eeee". That said, Americans tend to mangle other languages and quite a few names have had their original pronunciations messed with (i.e. Neiman of Neiman-Marcus), You basically have to go with how the family pronounces it! Growing up, I knew a family named DuBois who pronounced it "Du-Boyce". It would probably kill any French person to hear that. Brent IP: Logged |
