A completed eBay auction featured a fork with a typical Amaryllis handle but a most unusual fork end. From the back image (permission given to use) the handle has a typical "sterling" stamp. The fork end is stamped "sterling silver". We have never seen a Shiebler or for that matter any American sterling piece with the redundant "silver" following "sterling". Is the stamp "sterling silver" a guarantee that the piece has been, ah, altered?

Bob and Carol, I would bet money that this was altered. The asparagus fork form is (as you probably know) not Shiebler's. I think it might be Tiffany's design. I have seen the same overlapping leaf design on repro asparagus forks with R & B Six Fleurs, Whiting Lily, etc. handles. I am trying to recall if I have seen "STERLING SILVER" on real Victorian American silver; I think I did once, on a coin silver piece that was later stamped STERLING SILVER by a different retailer. So it is not necessarily bad if you see this mark, but I would say caveat emptor. [This message has been edited by Paul Lemieux (edited 08-06-2004).] IP: Logged |

The close-up pretty much confirms that this is a fantasy reproduction, made by casting rather than die struck, as are the others Paul mentions. If we could see the handle close-up it should be obvious that it is a casting. These pieces are quite abundant on a well-known auction site. I actually fell for a piece a couple of weeks ago, a Gorham figural Bon Bon. I had doubts after the bid, but it was too late to retract. Beware, indeed! Brent IP: Logged |
