Does anyone have a suggestion on good books available about Shiebler and their wares? IP: Logged |

Maybe it's time to rehash this question, because if there aren't any books on shiebler, there should be. Far and away my favorite maker for the simple fact that they made so many pieces that other companies have nothing to even compare to (I mean this more in the sense that outside of flatware, they made so many unique items- always with it's own twist) IP: Logged |

Right now auction catalogs and Silver Magazine are probably the public's best bet for examples of and info on Shiebler. Also the hard to find old trade journals like JCKHR sometimes have insightful advertisements and business blurbs. As far as I know, the best coverage on Shiebler flatware is in our book. Even though we cover more than anyone else there is a lot more for us to add. Hardly 6-8weeks goes by before we see a never before seen Shielbler flatware pattern, holloware, jewelry. I hear there is a book in the works. I know the author. I have not seen the draft. I hear the final draft is nearing completion. I also believe several forum members have contributed to the book. I don't know when it is scheduled to go to print but I look forward to its arrival. IP: Logged |

Having the great good fortune to spend an afternoon not so long ago (thanks to a pair of forum regulars) seeing a wonderful collection of Shiebler (thanks to the generous owners), being exposed to it for the first time in a substantial way, it was a complete eye opener. In thirty-three years of studying silver there are only a few styles that stand out from the crowd both technically and with complete originality: the Sythian gold work (c.300BC), Van Viannan (sp?) Auricular style (1630's), Lalique (1890's). Shiebler has all that the others share in a quiet confident way. I would love to see a book on the company, who designed for it, how was the work approached ( a la Martele), and of course more examples of their work. IP: Logged |
