I inherited six Tiffany knives which my grandmother thought were sterling...when I took them in for appraisel, my silversmith said they were not sterling...probably nickle silver...they are gorgeous...heavy...marked Tiffany NYC...any thoughts as to where I can get some more info...I have tried my library...Memphis is not a mecca for silver.... Scott suggested that I put in a pix of the pattern w/ more detail...bear w/ me because I am just a "poke & grin" computer person who has printed the rules on how to post a URL....each knife is 9 7/8"....blades are marked "Tiffany & Co, New York w/ a shield w/ a "T" (I think - no lope), knife is again stamped Tiffany & Co on the shaft -- I have taken them to 3 jewelers who all swore they were ss...then tested them and said nickle silver and sent me to the next jeweler...thus visiting 3 jewelers. This pattern is the Tiffany & Co. pattern called Whittier and was introduced circa 1907. It is not "nickel silver" but is Silver Plate (a.k.a. "E. P."). Nickel silver is a silver white alloy which contains no silver. Most jewelers test using one of the various nitric acid tests..... I hope this was not the case with your pieces, as these tests are invasive and remove silver thereby usually leaving base metal showing. Very good job posting your first photo. IP: Logged |
