Those of you who are not academic decorative arts types probably missed an article titled "Edward C. Moore and Tiffany Islamic- Style Silver, c. 1867-1889" in Vol. VI, no. 2 (Spring-Summer) 1999 issue of the journal Studies in the Decorative Arts, published by the Bard Graduate Center in NYC. It gives a nice overview of the subject as related to hollowware but, curiously, omits any mention of Tiffany's "Persian" flatware. Based on statements in Edward C. Moore's obituary (1891), Carpenter and others have said that John C. Moore retired shortly after he entered into an agreement in 1851 to manufacture exclusively for Tiffany and that his son, Edward C., took over the firm at this time. By tracing various directories, the author of this article found evidence that John C. did not retire (and Edward C. did not take over) until 1864. Back issues of this journal are available at $l5.
