I was at our montly antique fair and noticed a small rather crude brass tray with C.S.A. marked on the underside of one edge. I was told by the vendor that it was an item by the Comfort Studios at Attica, A short lived experiment sponsored by Tyffany Studios for the inmates at Attica Prison.... Can anyone shed some light on this? I have never heard of this before. The dealer said a friend of his had researched it. Can anyone tell me where one would research such a thing? Thanks IP: Logged |

Hi Fred, I'm afraid that the only CSA-marked items I can think of are Confederate army pieces like belt buckles. I don't suppose it could have been fashioned from an old buckle? Even if not, it still might be a Confederate Army piece. The Tiffany story sounds neat, and is at least plausible, but I would tend to doubt it, absent any other information. Brent IP: Logged |

Brent, Thanks for you responce... I had never heard of such a thing, but I figured it was work investigating. The small tray is rather crudely done and I doubt if it would have met with Tiffany standards. We can chalk this up to those stories dealers tell or are told and pass on. I will see the dealer next month and see if he has further infomation.... Fred IP: Logged |

The idea of a Comfort Studios at Attica sounds very unbelievable to me. None of the several books on the life and activities of Louis Comfort Tiffany mentions any such thing. Besides, the activities of the Tiffany Studios were sharply curtailed after W.W.I and by the late twenties were down to a trickle. The company filed for bankruptcy in 1932, with liquidation becoming complete in 1938. Tiffany himself died in 1933. Attica prison didn't open until ca. 1930. So the whole thing sounds conceptually and historically implausible. Brent's idea about some connection with the Confederate States of America (C.S.A.) is much more believable. IP: Logged |

William, I certainly will chaulk this up to a vendor being fed a story and he firmly belives it... the price of this crude tray is $150. Thank you for your edjucated input. I commend this forum and have recomended it to several of my friends. It is wonderful how we can each share our passions. Fred IP: Logged |
