We're looking for information regarding a compote (or centerpiece) that we recently inherited. The following information is located on the bottom... Tiffany & Co. An "M" mark Also there is a "273" scratched into the bottom as well that is not part of all the markings noted above. There are 4 ram heads around the bowl portion of the piece and the "foots" look like hoofs. Looking for information regarding the date the item was produced, designer and whether it is part of a collection of similar items that were available for purchase (in case we'd like to add other pieces to our collection). Most importantly, we'd love to know if a photograph of this item happens to exist in any publication as we thought it would be neat to see the piece being referenced somewhere. Thanks in advance for any help. I have a photo available if there is a way to send it for posting. IP: Logged |

Due to technical problems, I was unable to respond to your query until today, for which I apologize. An incuse "M" mark was used on items produced by Tiffany between 1869 (or 1876?) (depending on what source one believes) and 1891. Tiffany occupied premises at 550 Broadway between 1853 and 1870. If one combines these two pieces of information, it would appear that your piece was made 1869-1870. The "1601" is a pattern number; "1456" is an order number. It is possible that your piece was entered by its pattern number into the Pattern Book, now in the Tiffany & Co. archives in Parsippany, NJ. If so, there may be an indication of related items in the same pattern. I am unable to answer the other questions you posed. For a hefty fee, archives personnel will research your questions.
