I recently ran across this lovely Tiffany tea cake knife (for lack of the proper term) in the Orpheus variant of the Olympian pattern. It measures 10 1/8" long and the blade is inscribed June 8th, 1883. Two questions: In addition to the standard hallmarks on the blade, there is a small "O" punched on the collar area, at the join of the blade proper to the handle. Is this meant to signify the pattern name or does it have some other meaning? And second, what would a piece like this sell for in 1883? IP: Logged |

Your cake knife in Tiffany's Olympian pattern is very beautiful. I have seen a similar O punched on the collar of various Tiffany knives. It is not limited to the Olympian pattern. I don't know its significance. And I don't have a clue as to what this piece would have sold for in 1883. According to the 1908 Blue Book, a silver "cake server" in Olympian would have sold that year for $8.50 if plain and $10.00 if gilded. No silver "cake knife" is listed. IP: Logged |
