Hello All,

This unusual Tiffany cup, exhibited at the 1900 Paris Exposition Universelle, recently appeared on the market. I had a chance to examine it, and wanted to share it with the Forums. One big mystery about this cup is what the scenes are supposed to represent. On the one side we have a young boy(?) pulling a large trunk by the handle, with an overseer in Middle Eastern garb threatening him with a switch. On the other side we have the same boy holding a jar from which some sort of vapors are emerging, and a god-like figure directing him.

The decoration on the cup appears to be completely hand-chased. That said, it was not the only one of this type produced. A seemingly identical cup, but not an exhibition piece, sold at Christie's in January of 1999.

Does anyone have any ideas as to the origin of the decoration on this piece? I would guess that it is derived from some legendary/literary/mythological source. Many people seem to think that it has a Biblical derivation, but I can't think of any Bible story that fits with this. I was thinking it might be from the Arabian Nights.

Any ideas?

Brent

Looks like a story about a genii in a bottle. Perhaps in one picture the boy (Aladdin-like) is enslaved; and in the other he has released the genii from the bottle. What I find odd is thke "Exhibition Piece 1900" inscription. It looks like period engraving--but why? Was it a piece that didn't sell in Paris, and was brought back to a store and engraved so as to make it more saleable? Anyone else seen this inscription before?
