Was browsing eBay and came upon an early Tiffany-retailed tray by Moore. The bottom had some kind of applied piece of silver that looked to be later-added. In the mark was the word "LATE". Does anybody know what this unusual stamp signifies? IP: Logged |

Paul, re: "applied piece of silver that looked to be later-added" I have seen this before, especially on trays where there has been a mono removal. The removal of the mono thins the silver such that it needs to be reenforced. Re: "the word "LATE"" I have never seen the Moore mark with the LATE mark before. Could it be a mistake of some kind? Maybe:
I am anxious to hear what others have to say. IP: Logged |

Hi, The mark is intended to read "Tiffany & Co., Late Tiffany Young and Ellis" This phrase appears on Tiffany's letterhead of this period. Basically, it is saying that they were, until recently, Tiffany Young and Ellis, but are now Tiffany & Co. I will see if I can post a picture of the letterhead so you can see what I mean. Here is the letterhead, actually the head of an invoice. Sorry for the color; it is a photocopy of the original, on yellow paper. The invoice is dated 1861, and I have another invoice dated 1858. The small print reads: "DIAMONDS AND OTHER PRECIOUS STONES, SILVER WARE, FINE JEWELRY, WATCHES, CLOCKS, BRONZES, PLATED WARE, DESKS, DRESSING CASES, FINE STATIONERY, &C., &C." IP: Logged |
