I have aquired a Civil war Belt Buckle and would like information about it. It appears to be Brass. Oval shape with lettes CS. On the back are words "Tiffany Studios New York" and the number 46. Any info would be appreciated.

I'm afraid your buckle is a fake. Although Tiffany & Co. was in business at the time of the Civil War, Tiffany Studios, which was founded by Louis Comfort Tiffany, didn't begin operations until much later. I had heard of these fake buckles before; there may even be a previous thread about one. I do know that the number of Civil War fakes is quite high. The "camp sets", mainly consisting of an old crusty spoon and a bunch of metal fragments, are a popular fake. If you look at the spoons in such sets, the marks will usually indicate a date from the late 1800's-early 1900's.

The Tiffany fakes are being produced as we speak in the Far East. Glass , bronzes, just about everything by Tiffany, as well as things Tiffany would never have produced, can be purchased wholesale through several unscrupulous "antique" dealers.

Sorry to give you bad news, but I hope it helps!
