I am so glad I just discovered this board. I suspect that the folks here, especially Dr. Hood (just finished your book, thanks for such a wonderful work) can help me. I am confused about the differences between the Tiffany and Beekman patterns. I've encountered a number of offers (on the web) for Beekman where the pieces being displayed have the 'knobs' on the side. Yet in Dr. Hood’s book (page 171) he notes that “These were removed when dies were recut for the pattern’s {sic Tiffany} reintroduction as Beekman in 1956.” What I cannot find is a good photo comparison noting the differences between the two patterns. Hopefully, the easy answer will be that when recut, the marks changed. What are the expected marks for Beekman? Or can someone post good photos comparing the two? Also, in Dr. Hood’s book, he notes the change in the antefix on the terminal tip of the Tiffany pattern (figure 254a, page 171 and figure 55, page 55). Did this change carry over into Beekman? Should I expect to be paying a premium for a piece in Tiffany that has a sharp pointed antefix? Thanks for helping and again, thank you for a wonderfully written, informative book. Jack H-S

Due to technical problems, I have been unable to respond to your question until now, for which I apologize. For inexplicable reasons, many dealers and collectors refer to the Tiffany flatware pattern (with the side knobs) incorrectly as Beekman (without the side knobs). I must confess that I have had occasion to examine very few pieces of Beekman, so am unsure as to whether all their markings changed. I will try to research this point. Also, am unable to say whether any pieces with Beekman have the pointed antefix, although I suspect not. A piece of true Tiffany (with side knobs) and with a pointed antefix is an old piece and, other things being equal, should command a higher price than a piece with a rounded antefix. Thanks for your comments about our Tiffany book. IP: Logged |

With difficulty, finally found a few pieces of Beekman to examine. They were all marked on the stem reverse (incuse): TIFFANY & CO. / STERLING. And they all had the rounded antefix. Sorry about the delay in posting this information. IP: Logged |
