![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I have a cube-shaped box (2.5" x 2.5" x 2.5") that is marked "Tiffany & Co, Sterling, Portugal on the bottom. The inside of the box is smooth but the exterior is completely textured with a pattern that makes me think of the many fine layers in rich pastry. Is this a fake, and if it is, might it still be sterling? Any information will be sincerely appreciated. Thank you. [This message has been edited by montana_magpie (edited 09-29-2004).] IP: Logged |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I don't think it is a fake. It sounds like modern Tiffany silver, some of which is now produced in other countries and then just stamped Tiffany & Co to be sold in NY or one of their other stores. Sadly, most of these newer Tiffany items no longer exhibit the fine quality and innovation of Tiffany's earlier silver that was produced in-house. IP: Logged |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Thanks to everyone who responded to my post. I have tried to get a picture over here but so far have failed. Unfortunately, I'm about to leave town for a couple of weeks so it will have to wait until I get back. The stamp on the bottom of the box is in all caps without any other marks. It looks something like this: TIFFANY&CO STERLING PORTUGAL
I can email the pictures but can't figure out how to get them here! Many thanks. Pat IP: Logged |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() This is clearly a contemporary gift piece by Tiffany, who routinely outsource their silver to European makers. Portugal has a great silversmithing tradition, so it's logical that they would be one place to produce things for Tiffany. Tiffany today does in fact produce a lot of its own silver, but nowhere near at the level they did in their Newark factory at the turn of the century. IP: Logged |
