I just had to point out that one of the witnesses S. H. (Salem Hamilton) Wales, was my great-great grandfather. Who knew? IP: Logged |

And another note; Tiffany's was probably NOT making these decorations yet, and probably went to Durand & Co. in Newark to have them made (in gold, I'm sure). Tiffany's archives indicate that they were buying gold things from Durand by this period, and Charles Tiffany was actually on their board of directors until 1883. IP: Logged |

Most interesting. I have not seen such an award by (or for) Tiffany.

Here is an example of the Jockey Club ornament. Unfortunately, some fool had a hole drilled to make it into a pendant and so the ribbon and bar pin attachments are long since gone. It is made of silver in several pieces (the garter, stirrups, crop, and horseshoe are separately made & assembled). This example is inscribed "Charles P. Currie 1866." I guess they were making these items while the design patent was still pending. It is marked only TIFFANY & CO, the "TIFFANY" forming an arc above "& Co." I have seen this mark once before, on a lone ca 1880 silverplated cuff button that was square with polychrome enamel foliate decoration. However, the Jockey Club fob seems to be solid silver.
