I have a Tiffany & Co. Makers coffee pot that, according to family lore, was bought by my grandfather around the turn of the century. I gather there is a way to date these pieces from the pattern number (which appears to the left). Can someone tell me the year, and also suggest the reference which decodes the pattern numbers by date? Also, next to the pattern number is a scratch mark, 15/50, and another scratch mark to the right, 559. Can anyone explain? Thanks! IP: Logged |

Many people feel the two best Tiffany reference books are Charles H. Carpenter Jr's "Tiffany Silver" from 1978 and "Tiffany Silver Flatware 1845-1905" by Hood, Berlin and Wawrynek 1999. Dr. Hood is the moderator of this forum and if you click on his name in the list of forums you will find additional information about the book. It is a beautiful book even if you are not focusing on flatware. The particular "M" on your pot is for the period between 1907 and 1947 when John C. Moore was president of the company. The pattern number is usually the number to the left with an order number to the right. Your left hand number would seem to indicate ca. 1907. I do not know how to interpret the "scratch" marks which I believe are inventory marks and vary from one retailer to another. I would be very interested if someone knows how to "decode" them. Due to technical problems, I have not been able to respond to your question until now, for which I apologize. "Secondcourse" is correct: the stylized "m" on your pot indicates a date of manufacture between 1907 and 1947, and the pattern number "17085" indicates a date of 1907. The relationship between a hollowware pattern number and date of issue can be found in the book Tiffany Silver, by Carpenter and Carpenter (New York: Dodd, Mead, 1978), p. 261. I agree that the scratched numbers are usually inventory numbers, and I also am unable to decipher them. [This message has been edited by William Hood (edited 01-27-2004).] IP: Logged |

These scratch marks are curious. One sees them on many if not most good pieces of holloware. I believe that sometimes they refer to weight (especially English pieces), but don't know exactly what. Thought its unlikely weight is an issue with these scratch marks. IP: Logged |
