I have inherited a set of silverware from my grandmother. It belonged to her grandmother or her great-grandmother. It has sort of and ivy and daisy pattern on the front. On the reverse, there is a mark but I'm unable to tell what it is - having some photos enhance to see if that will help. On the reverse there is also the following STERLING PAT. APP***. Also, Giles Bro. & Co. Where the astericks are, I am unable to define. Does anyone have any ideas about the date of this silver? I'm trying to figure out which ancestor it came from and what area of the country. Thanks so much for your help. I've learned a lot just in the few minutes I've spent surfing your site. IP: Logged |

Giles Bro. & Co. were the retailers of the piece. Am not sure where they were located--Philadelphia perhaps? The pieces are probably marked "PAT. APP. FOR," which stands for Patent Applied For, which was supposed to mean the company applied for a patent on the pattern, although in some cases no patent application was ever actually made. Many companies, including Durgin, Whiting, Gorham, and others, marked their flatware with similar patent marks. So seeing the pattern and picture of the mark would help us identify a maker and also ascertain an approximate date for the pieces. IP: Logged |

Giles, Brothers & Co. were prominent jewelry wholesalers and retailers in Chicago, IL from 1862 to 1896. I would strongly suspect that your set was purchased in Chicago. As Paul said, the actual manufacturer could be just about anyone. It sounds like there is a trademark on your pieces. If we can decipher it, we will probably be able to tell you who made it and a rough date range. If you can't get good pictures of it, find a magnifying glass and try to describe it for us. Good luck!
