What does .7546 mean on a piece of Wilcox hollowware mean? This piece is approximately 3.5 in high and 2.5 inches in dia. The engraving on the side is of a young boy playing a flute and a woman and small girl watching; all are in a garden. This item is quite bent up and scratched don't know what it is or what it was used for. Does any one have any ideas for me?

My initial guess would have been that the 7546 is just a stock number for the item. A lot of hollowware had such numbers on it. I don't know what the decimal is before the 7, though. Is it just some stray mark that looks like a decimal point?

To identify its purpose, a picture would really help, or at least a little more description of the general shape--is it cylindrical, or does it taper at all? The size makes it sound like it could have been a youth cup. Does it have a handle (or did it)? Also, the dents and scratches could have been the results of an angry child. The subject matter sounds like Kate Greenaway inspired fare, which was popular in youth silver in the 1880s/90s, on mugs, napkin rings, etc.

So this is a start, but a picture of the piece and marks would help pin it down better.
