Hi. Can anybody identify this pattern and its maker; the fork is marked "Starr & Marcus" and "Sterling Patent." I understand from somewhere (possibly even SMP forums) that Starr & Marcus retailed Gorham and Wendt pieces, and I'm sure this isn't Gorham. Here are a bunch of images: IP: Logged |

Great piece; you seem to come up with some real doozies. Anyway, it is definitely a Wendt pattern. Unfortunately, I don't think this one has ever been matched to its correct name. I will check and get back to you! Brent IP: Logged |

We did talk about Wendt patterns before, when you posted a piece of Wendt's Grecian pattern. At any rate, the same article in the July/August 1992 issue of Silver magazine illustrates your pattern, but is unable to conclusively assign it a name. In the article, Diana Cramer attempts to link a known pattern to each listed Wendt pattern in Turner's American Silver Flatware book. When all was said and done, she was left with one pattern (yours) and one name, Tulip. She speculated that your pattern might be named Tulip, but could not offer any proof, other than the process of elimination. Unfortunately, there is good evidence that Turner's list was not complete. The "Armor" pattern produced by Whiting seems to have been a Wendt pattern; I have seen it with typical Wendt marks. I have also seen some unusual pieces that look like Wendt and are marked appropriately, but are unidentified. So, your pattern may be Tulip, or it may be something else entirely. Regardless, anything by Wendt is a treasure, as far as I am concerned. Keep yours eyes open! IP: Logged |
