Hello. I've just bought a sterling oyster fork with a Neo-Classical pattern featuring a greek key motif
It is only marked "STERLING" and "PATENT." Can somebody identify the maker and pattern, and also give me a date? Judging by the pattern & monogram, it looks like 1860s to me. Is it by Wendt? I know that, since he sold directly to retailing outfits such as Ball, Black & Co., he didn't sign his work with a mark or name, only STERLING or 925 with the word PATENT, plus this fork appears to fit his time of activity. Thanks, Paul p.s. I'm thinking of buying a digital camera for photographing silver & jewelry for online auctions. What are some recommendations for a digital camera with a zoom capable of capturing close-ups of marks, pattern detail, etc.? IP: Logged |

Sorry I can't help with the pattern name, but as for your digital camera question, the Sony Mavica 10x does a fantastic job. IP: Logged |

I've seen this pattern referred to as Wendt's 'Grecian', but have not seen any conclusive evidence to that fact. IP: Logged |

This pattern was identified as Wendt's "Grecian" by Diana Cramer in Silver magazine (July-August 1992). The attribution is based on a process of elimination. Noel Turner listed 18 patterns as being produced by Wendt, including one called Grecian. Unfortunately, Turner mistakenly identified Henry Hebbard's Grecian as Wendt's. This left your pattern, which is almost certainly by Wendt, as a likely candidate for the Grecian appellation. It does have Greek keys, after all. Back issues of Silver are a great resource. You can browse a complete article list on their web site and order the back issues you want. They are at www.silvermag.com. IP: Logged |
